Overview
The six hour clinical education module provides comprehensive education and training in the recognition,
management and review of service users presenting with co occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Many other training packages are available that address alcohol and drug issues or mental health issues but few address the combination of the two and their management in the general practice setting. General practitioners see service users with a wide range of co occurring disorders regularly and are well skilled in managing people with complex needs.
Managing the particular combination of mental health and substance use disorders is known to be challenging to both service providers and service users. This module is written specifically to assist clinicians to build their knowledge and skills through thorough coverage of high prevalence, co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders that are frequently seen in general practice an community health services. Units focus on patient care as well as the role of families and carers as support for people with these co-occurring disorders.
Focus of learning
The focus of the clinical education is multidisciplinary and encourages practitioners to develop care plans with their patients that allow for effective pathways of care provided by a range of health and community services. The training units emphasise the importance of clinicians working with their patients to:
- Understand high prevalence co-occurring disorders
- Complete thorough history taking and assessment
- Provide common explanations for co-occurrence of mental health and substance use disorders
- Recognise and treat co-occurring disorders
- Develop appropriate referral pathways and regular review opportunities.
